problems in libmutil

Dear Mikeal and Matts,

i did what u asked me here are the results:
pkg-config : 0.20
gcc 4.03
autoconf 2.59
automake 1.5
libtoolize 1.5.22
make 3.81beta4
and i ve just intalled the gawk 3.1.5-2build.

so i tried the whole process again but it got the same results.
if u can help me i ll be greatfull, cause my boss just got in from his 
vacation and i have nothing in my hands :-(.
