If you already had built your working copy, the instructions in the
README.build do not apply.  Cesc's suggestion will forcibly clean-up all
of the vestigal pieces.  Without such a step, it's possible that you
have a nasty mix of old and new build components.

I have updated the documentation to clarify this point, even if it did 
not help in your case.
