It'd be nice to make it work for as wide a range of tool versions
as practical. I already had to modify my pkg-config because Ubuntu
uses version 0.19. (You guys are using debian? Doesn't that mean
you're on the same version?)

Also, all these build tools are inter-related in ways I don't want
to think about, and forcing an upgrade in libtool might require
something somewhere else.

Also, I haven't verified the patch in the link I posted.

On the other hand, telling people to do the softlink is possibly
more lame than telling them they have to have a certain version
of a tool.

Anyway, I'm working on an old trunk pull. It'll be a few weeks
before I'm ready to merge to the head. So, unless someone posts
a solution that I can apply myself, these changes won't affect
me for a while.

Cesc,

If libtool hasn't changed for you, than something changed to trigger
the behavior. It could be the project's input files or it could be
another build tool. Did you update any tools since December?

Is this problem worth a binary search of pulls and builds?

I, too, would like to *understand* how the problem manifests,
but I don't have the time.

Are there no other projects using MUTIL_LIBS-like entries with
AC_CHECK_* functions to support in-place builds that we can
learn from??
