libtool 1.5.6 on debian

Hey all,

Strewn in amongst the various patches that I have made so far today, you
should find all of the changes needed to fix support for libtool 1.5.6
on Debian. I will slap in some support for Ubuntu as a finishing touch;
are there other Debian-based distros that we need to actively support?

I feel like I need a shower, but there you go. For the record, the
shower is because we had record heat today... what were you thinking? ;)
