try with debian testing

i guess your mileage depends on which debian packages you have installed
on your system.  i tried with a very basic debian testing installation
without almost no extra packages beyond installer "Choose software to
install" question.  i had compiler, libtool, libltdl3-dev, and a few
others.  i thought that configure would detect what i'm missing rather
that ending up to compiler error.
